Located in the US desert state of Nevada, Las Vegas is one of the most colourful and exciting cities on the planet. Because of its hot, desert climate, the city remains warm throughout most of the year, but does often suffer cold winters in January and February.

Las Vegas is immensely popular with US tourists and foreign visitors alike, who are attracted to the glamour and glory that the city can often promise.

With its many casinos, world-famous shows and live entertainment, much of the city remains open to the public 24 hours a day and has become known as ‘the city that never sleeps’.

This has ensured its legendary status amongst thrillseekers and tourists looking to win big money at the gambling tables.

Arriving Las Vegas Airport

Las Vegas Airport is the main airport serving the city of Las Vegas, located in the US state of Nevada. Located only 5km south of downtown Las Vegas, taxi cabs from the airport to the heart of Las Vegas can be found for as little as $8-$11 for this short journey.

The airport is definitely not the quickest to pass through in terms of standard arrival procedures, with security and customs checks being extremely thorough, possibly due to the predominantly monetary nature of why so many people visit Las Vegas.

The speed does pick up once you hit the rental car queues though, and once you have passed through security you should not have too long to wait before you are leaving the airport.

Driving In Las Vegas

The sheer amount of transport on the Las Vegas roads, as well as the amount of pedestrian traffic on the streets can make Las Vegas quite an uncomfortable driving experience for the first-time US driver, and many visitors tend to use public transport in order to reach the local attractions and the main Vegas strip.

Buses and taxis are quite expensive, but once in the heart of Las Vegas, it is possible to walk to most of the attractions.

Car parking charges can also be incredibly expensive, and due to the volume of traffic, parking availability can often be difficult to locate.

Driving away from the city centre is far quieter, but be warned that the roads deteriorate towards the mountains and desert areas, and you must take extra care when driving through these regions.

Las Vegas Driving Tips

  • Drivers are responsible for all passengers wearing seatbelts. If pulled over, it is the driver who will be charged for failing to ensure that seatbelts are worn at all times.
  • As with elsewhere in the US, drink driving is strictly prohibited. You will be pulled over and charged if you attempt to drink while you are driving.
  • American cars drive on the right side of the road. Only use the left lane while performing overtaking maneuvers.
  • Children under the age of 12 cannot sit in the front seat of the car. Also, all children under the age of 8 must have a car seat or booster seat in order to travel.
