Las Vegas is the largest city in the US desert state of Nevada. Widely known as the ‘entertainment capital of the world’, Las Vegas is a heady combination of bars, restaurants, casinos, hotels and tourist attractions.

One of the most colourful cities on the planet, there is an ‘otherworldly’ feel to the city unlike anywhere else in the world, and there is truly something for all of the family to enjoy, although most attractions are targeted strictly at adults only.

The city’s hot, desert climate ensures that Las Vegas can grow incredibly warm during the summer, although it does experience colder winters than many other major US cities. It also boasts beautiful mountainside scenery and offers a stunning sunset cityscape view.

Arriving Las Vegas Airport

Las Vegas Airport is located around 8km from the Heart of downtown Vegas, and taxi cabs can therefore be expected to cost you around $20-$25 for the journey.

One of the busiest airports in the world, you can be assured of quite lengthy waits when passing through the terminals upon arrival, especially during security checks, which are some of the most thorough in the country.

Car rental options are numerous and the queues tend to move very quickly. The airport also offers a wide range of shopping and dining facilities for you to peruse before you leave the airport.

Driving In Las Vegas

Driving in Las Vegas can be quite a fraught experience due to the amount of traffic and pedestrians on the roads at any one time.

While the roads are in extremely good condition, you need to take great care when driving through highly populated areas, as people will tend to walk into the road without looking.

Please also note that roads around the desert and Vegas mountains are not always in such good condition and are often poorly signed.  You will therefore need an updated GPS system and lots of care to navigate these regions safely.

Las Vegas Driving Tips

  • As with elsewhere in the US, drink driving is strictly prohibited. You will be pulled over and charged if you attempt to drink while you are driving.
  • Drivers are responsible for all passengers wearing seatbelts. If pulled over, it is the driver who will be charged for failing to ensure that seatbelts are worn at all times.
  • Most hotels and attractions now offer free parking. Take advantage of this and ask around when booking a hotel to see if their facility offers this.
  • Be patient. The streets of Las Vegas are notoriously busy and you will be driving at a consistently slower speed than in other major cities. Driving by car is still the most efficient way to navigate Vegas, so just take a deep breath and take in the scenery while you travel.
