Malaga is an immensely popular tourist destination located in Andalusia, Spain. It is the 6th largest city in Spain and boasts wonderful coastal views, long, sandy beaches and a vibrant and globally famous nightlife scene.

With its Mediterranean climate and pleasant all year round weather, Malaga remains popular throughout the year with foreign visitors, although the city really comes alive during the Summer months when millions of people flock to the city in search of the perfect vacation.

With its historic and architectural beauty, along with its modern districts filled with bars, restaurants and shopping outlets, the city provides something for everybody, catering to all age groups and multicultural groups.

Arriving Malaga Airport

Malaga Airport is the 4th busiest airport in Spain and is located only 8km from the city centre. Taxi cabs from the airport to downtown Malaga can therefore be expected to charge as low as $7-$11 for the journey.

While the airport is fairly quiet for around 8 months per year, it becomes far busier during the Summer months when millions of foreign tourists pass through its terminals.

This inevitably results in lengthier airport waits, although many sensibly avoid this by visiting in Spring or Autumn when the weather is still warm.

Car rental options are numerous, and the airport offers many bars, restaurants and shopping facilities for those looking to dine before leaving the airport.

However, the facilities tend to be far more expensive than city centre prices, and you are advised to visit downtown Malaga before shopping or dining.

Driving In Malaga

Compared to other Spanish cities, such as Barcelona and Madrid, Malaga is quite a pleasant city to drive in, complimenting the relaxed feel of the city throughout much of the year.

Because of the fairly close proximity of Malaga’s attractions, many visitors forgo a rental car, which results in the city’s roads being far quieter than you would expect.

While the more modern areas of Malaga are well-designed and amply signed, you are advised to use an updated GPS system for travelling in Malaga’s historical regions, where poor signage and complicated road networks are harder to navigate.

Native drivers tend to be extremely friendly towards foreign drivers and the public transport system, including taxi cabs, is extremely cheap, with good availability at all times of the day.

Malaga Driving Tips
