Arriving Montreal Airport

Montreal Airport is the main international airport serving the Canadian city of Montreal, and is located around 20km from downtown Montreal. Therefore, taxi cabs from the airport to the city centre can be expected to charge you around $28-$35 for the journey.

As one of Canada’s busiest and largest airports, arrival processes such as check in, security, customs and baggage collection can be quite slow affairs, and you are advised to prepare yourself for a wait upon arriving at the airport, although previous visitors generally agree that this process speeds up once you hit the rental car areas, which are available by direct shuttle.

The airport offers an extensive array of public facilities, including dining and shopping outlets, although these are considered fairly expensive by the national airport average, and you may wish to arrive in Montreal city centre before pursuing these further.

Driving In Montreal

Montreal is quite a high-paced driving city for the most part, but can be quite an enjoyable experience once you have familiarized yourself with the area. Traffic levels tend to remain fairly high throughout the day and the city centre traffic can become terrible during peak traffic hours.

However, the city offers a tremendous public transport system among the best in Canada, and this may be a preferable alternative to driving through the heart of the city.

Road signage (in both French and English) is ample, and the general condition of the major road networks is excellent, but be sure to keep an eye out for the one way system which has engulfed certain parts of the city centre and surrounding areas. As ever, using an updated GPS system is one way to navigate this potential problem.

Montreal Driving Tips

  • Canadian cars drive on the right side of the road. Only use the left lane while performing overtaking maneuvers.
